\_||        hello.                                                           |

the jazz genre spans so much music - from traditional, lounge jazz
blues, uptempo bebop, and various latin-influenced, moving on to
newer jazz-funk, acidjazz and later into jazzy triphop and d&b.
and even in the scene we have used it a great deal, adding in
demo-funk. so, it's hard to know where to begin with this massage
(and where to stop).

jazz is a style which is often "quoted", rather than written as
new. it appears in many other types of music. how many styles do
you know that have the word "jazzy" on the front? triphop, house,
drum&bass and really anything these days. sometimes all it means
is the artist used a swingbeat or a trumpet sample. sometimes it
just means they ripped off a large chunk of a jazz record and
stuck it in. i don't care about those things. but, sometimes it
means a blending of old and new, something really interesting, and
a great piece of music.

so i wanted to show what we, the tracking scene, have done with
jazz. sometimes we've considered that in fact it's probably stupid
to try and make on computer something which is so designed to be
improvised and played live. and then again, we decided that it was
actually good fun to make anyway. here i'm giving examples of
various forms of it - both traditional and not, and what i love
about them. some of the tracks are well known, some quite rare..
so maybe you'll find something new too. =)

p.s. i decided not to include any tracks by j'ecoute members, no
blatent advertising :D

it's a 4chn mod written in 92, but to this day i have not heard a
better tracked song of this style or anything that comes close.
dizzy combines amazing musical skill (some would say best ever in
the scene) with very good technique and samples.

the piece is what sounds like an acoustic guitar duet with a bit
of percussion, all blended together so well. the chords, bass and
the various solos fit together perfectly, with variety but always
flowing. it is in my opinion one of the very few scene tracks of
acoustic music which is of the quality that it deserves to be
played by a real band.

the beauty of this song is the chord progression, and how all sits
on it. necros is a master of taking a "simple" idea (although
saying that, the chords used are still pretty tricky) and using it
over nearly all of the song, but always giving it variety, not
letting it get boring and repetitive.

the song mainly sits on one sequence of lovely chords, with some
others used for bridges and chorus. a large number of different
solos on various instruments sit over the top, with very dynamic
percussion. the song rises and falls beautifully. by keeping the
underlying ideas quite constant and returning to the catchy main
melodies quite often, it keeps the listeners ears glued to the
song rather then letting them wander (as they might on some jazz
tunes which seem like an unstructured load of solos). at the same
time, the solos are often really clever and skillful.

although you could criticise it for the choice of some of the
samples, this song should be taken as a lesson in musicality,
structure and how to write a good tune.

this piece is so beautifully mellow and downplayed, with just
piano and bass. the melody and chords play a slow and meloncholy
piece, which seems abstract at first but in reality has quite a
strong structure with some catchy melodies. the samples are very
important, and the piano sounds are exactly right, reverbed to
give them more space.

the composer wisely avoided percussion or any other instruments,
which would have ruined it in my opinion. because of the lack of
percussion it moves in its own time, not rigid, and all the
better for it. it is the spaces between the notes as much as the
notes themselves which make it good. the piano is tracked very
well, using volumes to give more feeling.

really, it's about an overall mood than any clever solos or
whatever. a beautiful piece.

you might remember cybelius from such great musicdisks as the
assidge series, and here's a track from #3. he always did very
guitar-based acidjazz, more like jamiroquai or some sly+family
stone, rather than brass filled tracks or whatever, and in his
tracking past also produced some punk musicdisks (with very
"interesting" vocals i must say). this track shows both of those
sides.

the track has a hard edge, starts off quietly menacing and builds
into an evil cresendo. and the bass really works for the track,
sitting pretty constant throughout. then, from this more and more
elements appear on top - guitar, and a lovely synthlead. it's all
such a strong moody song, kind of acidjazz with a punk influence.
and don't forget the lead guitar solo. =) there's no nice clean
samples and glossy production, it's raw and all the better for it.

nuke is a scene master of acidjazz and funk. maybe you remember
tunes like acidjazz part2 or jordan jazz? they always had a strong
live sound to them with great catchy basslines and cool organ, and
this one is no different. very funky percussion and the bassline
fits perfectly. on top of it the organ sounds irresistable and
catchy. it starts off playing the main melody but soon breaks into
a wicked solo.

the strength of the song is that all the parts fit together very
well. the bassline is quite simple - he knows you don't need a
stupidly complex bassline that can't be followed, it's better to
have a catchy one that controls how the tune moves by its changes.
the percussion is funky and sounds very appropriate. the guitar
fills the gaps, and the organ lies on top.

possibly the secret to funk is to 1) know how to make the right
bassline to control the song, 2) know how to fit everything on to
it correctly and 3) get a catchy lead that moves about a bit as
well. guess what, that's what this song does.

really dark wicked funky stuff. it's bassy, with that single deep
bass motif underpinning the whole thing throughout. then there's
more bass, some guitar, and a lovely sax taking the lead. it's
another song where the bassline holds it all together, everything
sits on that and then a great solo lead goes on the top. this time
the result, "horror funk"?

optic has done a lot of great funk and acidjazz tracks in the past
and particularly he blends it well with other styles, especially
triphop. this track struck me as being really original with its
sound. result? a lesson in how to make a track that sounds brand
new and bang up to date, but also sound like a funk classic.

something mellow to end on. it's definitely towards the scene
"demojazz" end of the spectrum, but does it very well indeed. the
samples are of a high quality, but the best thing about it is the
lovely melody and really strong and defined structure - recurring
themes, changes in all the right places and all the parts strong.
the chord progression seems to have had a lot of thought go into
it too.

near the end, there's some great interplay between leads and
piano, as they are all brought together. and if you want a lesson
on how to end a song, check this out - the way the key is dropped
by just a few notes a couple of times works very well.

this is a very nice relaxing tune. i would usually avoid something
like this, saying "it's too synthetic" or something, but the
strength of leviathan's musicality comes through and makes it well
